Piñol assures Bicol: DA to adopt ‘farmer’s choice’ policy
Local chief executives in the Bicol region have expressed strong support for the policy shift in the Department of Agriculture that will empower farmers to decide on how they farm.
Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol met with Bicol’s local chief executives earlier this week in Pili, Camarines Sur.
“Submit to me your proposals, and we will provide you with the assistance that you need, following of course that we stick to the agenda of the President to provide available and affordable food for everyone,” Piñol told Bicol’s political leaders.
The agriculture chief has dubbed Bicol as an agricultural giant that is just on the brink of waking up.
He said its proximity to Metro Manila gives it the advantage of being the food source for urban dwellers.
“We have to change the priorities of the Department and go back to our primary mandate, which is first and foremost to produce food,” he said during the meeting.
Piñol’s focus as agri chief is on ensuring food security and generating jobs and livelihood and foreign exchange earnings, the DA said in a statement.
“It will always be a farmers’ choice. What variety they want to plant, what fertilizers to use and what equipment. We are just here to make suggestions and provide the assistance they need, following a sound assessment and validation,” Piñol added.
