Piñol: Bicol Express rehabilitation to awaken agricultural giant
Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol is supporting Transport Secretary Art Tugade’s proposal to build and rehabilitate the train system that used to reach the Bicol Region.
Piñol said Tugade presented the proposal to build and rehabilitate the Bicol Railway System in Monday’s cabinet meeting which he said was an urgent need as it “would boost the growth of the region long neglected by the central government.”
Piñol travelled to Bicol right after the cabinet meeting and met the following day with its governors and most of its congressmen.
“The construction and immediate completion of the Bicol Railway System would also spur the growth of the agriculture and fisheries sectors in the region as it would facilitate the transport of the products to the market,” Piñol said.
The agriculture head noted that it was one of the rare moments in Bicol’s history that its political leaders, notorious for being divided, gathered and appeared to agree on a goal.
“Judging from the reaction of the political leaders and the farmers and fisherfolk, I made the conclusion that at long last, this region will no longer just be known as a land of beautiful scenery and Mayon Volcano,” Piñol added.
“It will soon be known as an emerging major supplier of food for Metro Manila and the rest of the country.”
“Yesterday, I saw the awakening of an agricultural giant,” Piñol said.
