Restoring soil fertility won’t be so easy: Dar
Former Agriculture Secretary William Dar said it will take the Department of Agriculture two years to cure the Philippines’ nutrient-deficient soil.
President Duterte said during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) that government will conduct a nationwide soil analysis, and will fertilize and rehabilitate the land.
Dar, in an interview with dzRH, said the DA would also need high-tech equipment to bring back the fertility of Philippine soil.
He also warned that government should not take the “shotgun approach” because the process takes a long time and should be sustained.
He said curing the land should also be done every six years thereafter.
Dar said the process includes conserving water and training the farmers on proper use of fertilizers and pesticides.
