Rice sufficiency is a “must, not a choice” – Piñol
Agriculture chief Emmanuel Piñol said last Friday that all top officials of the DA are encouraged to ensure smooth and vigorous execution of plans and programs laid out to achieve rice self-sufficiency in the country, Manila Times reported.
“We should hit rice self-sufficient within the next two years… It’s a must not a choice,” Piñol told reporters during a press conference following the department’s turnover rites in Quezon City.
The new DA chief said that he is prepared to deliver to all DA regional offices the essential inputs and support, including seed requirements and irrigation facilities, for them to attain self-sufficiency in their own regions.
“This administration is results-oriented. Any director that can’t do that will be asked to resign,” he said.
Piñol said that our country should aim for rice self-sufficiency at the regional level to alleviate the effects and damages caused by climate change, adding that the recent El Niño episode evidently displayed the need for the program.
“It depend on how much is the rice requirement of each region. If all regions are rice sufficient, ergo, the whole country is rice sufficient,” he said in the report.
