Sanctions aimed at stingray sellers

The Cebu Provincial Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force (CPAIFTF) will intensify its operations against traders and sellers of stingrays, which are protected species and whose population has drastically declined.

According to Cebu’s website, owners of market stalls who were seen selling stingrays have been warned and the fish confiscated.

Sanctions will be imposed if the traders will not abide by the warnings.

The CPAIFTF confiscated stingrays from sellers during an inspection in the wet markets of Mandaue City and Tabunok in Talisay City last July 13 and 14.

The Task Force said it will continue to conduct more operations against the traders and will intensify information and educational campaigns.
