Self-sufficiency must be achieved in 2 years – Piñol
Self-sufficiency in 2 years? The boss says yes, we can!
DA chief Manny Piñol said during the 50th Foundation Anniversary and 17th Tnalak Festival culmination program that the country should attain self-sufficiency for the next two years, as preparation for the effects of climate change.
In a report by the Philippine Information Agency, Piñol emphasized that the country would experience supply shortage if neighboring rice importer countries would be affected by El Niño, including Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.
“We need to attain rice sufficiency in the next two years and attain rice buffer stock six months before the Duterte administration ends,” Piñol explained as he talked to South Cotabateños at the South Cotabato Sports Complex on Monday, July 19.
To increase self sufficiency, the country must attain enough buffer stocks and that the DA would provide assistance to local farmers in food production.
“We will support the farmers by providing free seeds and free fertilizers for the next cropping terms on condition that these farmers deposit in a bank an amount equal to the amount of the production inputs given to them by DA so that they have available money to buy seeds and fertilizers of the next cropping,” he explained.
Fertilizers and seeds will be distributed on 2017, said the official.
