Senator Cynthia Villar files bill to develop urban farming
Senator Cynthia Villar has filed a bill aimed at promoting urban farming in the country to address the issue of food security.
Villar announced she filed the bill on twitter today.
“I have filed Senate bill 141 to help develop urban farming in the Philippines,” she tweeted.
Senate Bill 141 dubbed as the Integrated Urban Agriculture Act will mandate the Department of Agriculture to promote urban agricultural development.
Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol has already been working on urban farming to address the issue of food security. He plans to tap the urban poor and the homeless for the undertaking.
In an TV interview, Piñol said Villar’s awareness and knowledge agriculture and fisheries and the plight of farmers and fishermen “inspires” him.
He said that if there are more powerful people like Villar who are pushing for agriculture, the sector will develop exponentially.
