Stench of durian turns gold for Davao candy maker
Mr. Raakin had worked for various companies for years before he realized that he should sell his own durian products full-time. After all, he is the grandson of Abondia del Puerto Raakin who popularized durian candies under the brand Lola Abon established in the 1950s.
In 1993, Mr. Raakin started cooking and selling durian candies with a capital of only P500. It was a one-man show with him doing the cooking, packing and even marketing and selling the durian candies from one establishment to another.
He started to improve the recipes earlier learned from his grandmother and concocted a soft durian candy, which was different from the traditional hard durian candies in the market.
