UP swimming team asks Mang Larry to relocate

For over 3 decades, Mang Larry’s isaw has definitely earned a spot in the hearts of every UP Diliman student. However, this homegrown ihaw-ihaw can’t seem to find a stable spot in the campus.

Following a complaint from the UP Swimming Varsity Team on the smoke having an effect on the athletes’ daily practice, Mang Larry was asked to move again elsewhere, Inquirer reported.

This will be the third time for the well-known ihaw-ihaw food stall to relocate.

A tarpaulin sign now hangs on its stall, informing customers of its looming removal.

In May, the UP swimming sent a formal request to UP Chancellor Mike Tan that Mang Larry’s food stall be transferred to “a site where the smoke emitted will not be able to reach the vicinity of the swimming pool” around 15 meters away.

Bernie Cavida, UP simming team coach, guaranteed the community that they were not asking for the eviction of Mang Larry’s from UP but only for its relocation.

He noted that it’s all for the athletes’ welfare.

“These kids train here every day; we don’t want to compromise their health,” Cuvida said.

“The main issue is that as swimmers we are heavily dependent on air. [But] when we lift our heads from the water, the first thing we inhale is smoke,” said the swimming team captain, Joy Rodgers.

Mang Larry’s opens as early as 9 a.m. but at its peak in the afternoon, around 5 p.m., just in time when the team’s training is in full session.

Cavida said that the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs is presently “processing” the team’s appeal.

Lauro Condencido Jr. or Mang Larry himself, confirmed that he is already searching for his food stall’s next potential site within the campus.

Condencido said the management had not given him a deadline, but he refused to talk about the matter in detail, said Inquirer.

Mang Larry’s Isawan has essentially roamed the campus. Since it opened in 1984, it had been asked to relocate a couple of times, the report said.

For 31 years, Mang Larry’s operated at an area near Kalayaan dormitory.
In 2015, it transferred to the UP Law parking lot. However, just before the year ended, it was asked again to relocate near the UP chapel.
