Villar wants to keep Senate agri panel
Senator Cynthia Villar wants to retain the chairmanship of the Senate agriculture committee in the 17th Congress, claiming she has already come up with a legislative agenda for the agriculture sector.
“I had done a lot during the last three years. I have legislative agenda for agriculture for the next three years, I learned a lot from this committee and I want to share it for the sake of making agriculture sustainable,” Villar was quoted by the Philippine News Agency as saying.
In her three years as chairwoman, Villar pushed for the passage of 16 bills on agriculture and fisheries, six of which have been enacted into law.
They are the Sugar Industry Development Act, the law that deters illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, extension of the Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (ACEF) up to year 2022, the law declaring large-scale agricultural smuggling as economic sabotage, the Farm Tourism Development Act, and the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Act.
