Banana plantation reopens despite insurgency
Multinational banana company Dole-Stanfilco has resumed its operation in Surigao del Sur after shutting down for weeks due to insurgency.
Sunstar reported that Dole-Stanfilco reopened but on the condition that the local government unit protect it from the New People’s Army which has been burning its trucks and bananas.
Some 3,000 workers went jobless during the temporary closure.
Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) executive director Stephen Antig said the NPA has burned 19 container trucks and has cost the company P20 million since 2010 because of the firm’s refusal to pay revolutionary tax.
This month, rebels blew up the company’s truck with bombs.
Antig said government must do something about the insurgency problem or it will lose major investments in Mindanao.
