BoC takes custody of 3 vessels smuggling sugar in Zamboanga City
The Bureau of Customs has taken custody of the three vessels in Zamboanga City that attempted to smuggle refined sugar into the country.
Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon had confirmed to him that the three vessels that attempted to smuggle are now in the custody of the BoC.
“I assure you Sir that not a grain of sugar will be lost and we will not yield to the pressures by interested groups who are asking for the release of the vessels,” Piñol quoted Faeldon from their phone conversation.
Piñol said his sources in Zamboanga City have implicated two police officers and a customs collector in the attempted sugar smuggling.
One vessel alone, the M/B Sitti Aini, had 584 bags of refined sugar. The other two were still being inspected.
Faeldon will be flying to Zamboanga City to personally look into the matter.
Piñol wants the smugglers to be charged with economic sabotage that carries a maximum penalty of a lifetime imprisonment.
“People will now realise that President Rody Duterte is serious in his vow to stop the smuggling of rice and other agricultural commodities into the country,” Piñol said.
