CLSU researchers develop diarrhea test kit for pigs
Researchers from Central Luzon State University have developed a test kit for swine diarrhea that is simple, reliable, and fast.
The research was funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Research and Development, an agency under the Department of Science and Technology.
The Andali RT LAMP test kit was developed by researchers led by Dr. Clarissa Yvonne Domingo and Dr. Rubgilda C. Paraguison-Alili following an outbreak of the PED virus in Batangas. PED killed 11,414 pigs in Batangas from May to August 2010 or 67 percent of the hogs in the area.
The test kit will allow farmers to detect the virus causing PED even before symptoms appear and the results can be known within 30 minutes.
The researchers tested the kit on 320 samples from live pigs in commercial and small hold farms in Bulacan and Batangas.
