Lettuce see it for ourselves: Senator Kiko shows off organic harvest
In a sea of political posts in his official Facebook page, it is a breath of fresh air to see a rather different side of Senator Kiko Pangilinan – his inclination in planting and farming.
“Organic romaine lettuce. 30 days in the greenhouse. Fully grown and ready for harvesting” he said on a post.
Compared to typical lettuce, Romaine lettuce is more tolerant of heat, grows in a longer head of firmer leaves with strong ribs down their midpoints.
Earlier this year, Senator Kiko held a talk at UPLB, and jokingly said, “Ayoko na ng pulitika, magfafarming na lang ako.”
UPLB Perspective also reported that he also spent three years checking farms around the country, and visiting farmers and various agricultural stakeholders.
The report said the senator had his first lettuce harvest in 2012. However, just like any other farmer, he also experienced devastation in his vegetables and crops, including pest invasion, circumstances such as having plentiful harvest but no buyers or vice versa. His two greenhouses were also devastated, the report added.
