‘Madre de Cacao of the Philippines’ invigorates Davao cacao industry
The election of Charita Puentespina, of Malagos Chocolates fame, as chairwoman of the Cacao Industry Council of Southern Mindanao (CICSMIN) has brought added vigor to the region’s cacao industry.
The Mindanao Times reported that Puentespina is also known as “Madre de Cacao of the Philippines” for putting Davao cacao in the world map through its award-winning Malagos chocolate products.
Malagos chocolates won a bronze award in 2015 from the Academy of Chocolate Awards, and a silver in the same year at the 2015 International Chocolate Awards’ World Drinking Chocolate Competition in Germany.
Puentespina, in her acceptance speech, urged cacao growers to take advantage of the growing global demand for chocolate-quality cacao seeds by expanding production.
“We need to plant now,” she was quoted as saying.
