Piñol finds his chicken breed in Rustan’s agri fair
Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol was surprised to see his own chicken breed at Rustan’s agri fair dubbed Philippine Harvest last Friday.
Nico and Paula Aberasturi sell organic chicken and their products were among those showcased at the Philippine Harvest fair at Central Square on Bonifacio High Street.
On a post on his Facebook page, Piñol said the Aberasturi coupled approached him to tell him that the organic eggs and chicken they produce came from Piñol’s own farm.
“I felt so proud that the eggs of the chicken I bred in my farm a few years ago are now being sold in the organic market,” Piñol said.
The agri chief started a simple breeding experiment in his Kidapawan farm six years ago. He wanted to improve the genetics of native chicken so they can grow faster and lay more eggs.
“I intended to address the problems confronting the free-range native chicken growers which were the very slow growth of the native chicken, the poor egg-laying capacity and the inconsistent genotype and phenotype. So what I did, I started cross-breeding the iconic Asils with selected breeds which were good in egg-laying and I came up with two new strains of chicken – Manok Pinoy for meat and Black Star for eggs,” Piñol said.
