Piñol passes on 18K gold nugget gift to grandson
Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol was presented with an 18K gold nugget by Apayao Governor Elias Bulut Jr. in a recent trip to the province.
“It’s a simple token of our appreciation of your visit,” Piñol quoted Apayao Gov. Elias Bulut Jr. upon giving him the gold nugget.
The lore in Apayao is that 18-karat gold nuggets found in the rivers in the province is a blessing from the gods and those who get it are very lucky.
Piñol said the province is not openly allowing mining in the area but assumes that there are gold panners working in the rivers of the province.
To avoid questions on propriety, however, Piñol is passing on the gold nugget to his grandson.
“Honestly, I don’t know the rules governing officials like me receiving gifts from fellow officials but just to be safe, I will not own the gold nugget. Instead, I will pass it on to my grandson, who will be turning two-years-old today. So, effectively, it is a gift given by Gov. Bulut to a two-year-old child,” Piñol said on a post on his Facebook page.
