Piñol to push for airport in Apayao; pledges P100m in livelihood assistance
Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said he will push for the creation of a feeder airport in Apayao to allow the isolated province to realize its agro-tourism potential.
Piñol recently visited Apayao to distribute livelihood projects from the agriculture department, including P41 million in farm machineries and equipment, and 300 shallow tube wells.
“I guess this windfall of government assistance and projects on the poor farmers of Apayao was simply too good to believe that it took sometime before they realized that it was for real. It has been a long time since I saw faces of disbelief and shock,” Piñol said on a post in his Facebook page.
On top of that, Piñol also announced that the department is allocating P100 million in livelihood programs for the province under its Special Area for Agricultural Development program.
During the meeting with farmers, the Department of Agriculture also approved the opening of a road worth P26 million so that farmers do not have to walk for 10 hours to bring their goods to the market. Piñol said Congresswoman Eleanor Bulut-Begtang committed to provide P4 million in counterpart funding and Governor Elias Bulut Jr. committed to provide another P5 million in counterpart funding.
Piñol said the farmers couldn’t believe how things happened so fast.
“In a matter of two hours, the people of Apayao’s years of dreams and aspirations were given answers,” he said.
