R&D works on agri, climate change, highlighted at SyenSaya in Los Baños
Research and development works about rice and climate changes were recently recognized at SyenSaya, the Los Baños Science Hub, through its Los Baños Science Community Foundation Inc. (LBSCFI), Business Mirror reported.
Some of the papers that were awarded include “Bio-ecological Characteristics of Migratory Waterbirds at Priority Wetlands in Relation to Climate Change” and “Mapping and Monitoring Rice Areas in the Philippines: The Prism Project Experience of the International Rice Research Institute”.
The papers received the F.S. Pollisco Award and the Philippine Agriculture and Resources Research Foundation Inc. Research and Development Award, respectively.
New LBSCFI awards were also launched during the event, including the Youth Science Award and the Outstanding Research for Los Baños Development Award.
The turnover of LBSCFI stewardship by Dr. Casiano S. Abrigo Jr., its outgoing president, of the UPLB Foundation Inc. to Dr. Alexander R. Madrigal of the Department of Science and Technology, Region 4A also took palce during the closing ceremonies.
Keynote speaker for the event was Mr. Jim Leandro Cano, Philippine country representative of the Young Professionals for Agricultural Development. Cano emphasized the vital role of science and technology institutions and their partners in transforming the society through R&D efforts, including the speedy delivery of their results to projected beneficiaries, Business Mirror said.
“Lack of knowledge is the cause of suffering among many of our people. The best measure of success of research is the number of lives that we have uplifted with the research output that we have developed,” Cano said.
