Vizcaya can survive without mining, thanks to agri
Governor of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya Carlos Padilla said in a report by the Manila Times that the province can carry on even without mining as he stated his deep concern over mining issues involving the people, during an initial briefing by an Audit Mining Team sent by DENR chief Gina Lopez
“Between mining and agriculture, we chose thousands of years of agriculture than years of mining. Nueva Vizcaya will definitely survive without mining,” Padilla said.
The Mining Audit Team had a meeting with the governor, long with local officials and representatives from anti-mining groups for an operations for a scheduled audit of OceanaGold Corporation for its Didipio Copper-Gold Project in Kasibu town, the report said.
Forester Nemesio Beronilia from the Forest Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) central office, spearheaded the audit team together with DENR Region Director Wilfredo Malvar, representatives from Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) from the Bicol Region, Manila Times said.
Padilla cited former Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban during the merting saying he is believes in responsible mining but the infrastructure and apparatus to implement responsible mining are not yet in place.
”Therefore if the apparatus is not yet in place, then I am in the belief that at this stage we cannot say that there is responsible mining in the country,” Padilla said.
