Buy corn or face shortage, NFA warned
The Philippine Maize Federation Inc. (Philmaize) warned about a possible corn shortage if government will not address the drop in prices.
Businessmirror reported Philmaize president Roger Navarro as saying that the National Food Authority should buy more corn from farmers to normalize prices and save the farmers from losses.
Corn production contracted due to the prolonged dry spell. The quality of ears also suffered because of the heat.
Navarro said a shortfall is expected in Isabela, the country’s top corn producer, due to prolonged drought. He expressed hope that farmers will not be discouraged to plant.
Isabela has been under a state of calamity due to the dry spell, with damage to corn and palay reaching P1 billion.
