DA to SKor: Delay implementation of stricter fruit import standards
The Department of Agriculture (DA) said that it will request South Korea to delay for a year its implementation of stricter importation standards on fruit in 2017.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol said on Thursday that he concurs with the statement of local banana growers and exporters that they will be needing more time to prepare for the non-tariff measure to be implemented by Seoul, Business Mirror said in a report.
“I will handle all these issues by meeting and listening to the banana stakeholders. I have to listen to them first,” Piñol told the BusinessMirror.
“After that meeting, I will [see] South Korean Ambassador [Kim Jae-shin] next week to talk about the matter,” he added.
Piñol will personally talk to banana growers and exporters in Davao on Friday in line with the banana congress, where he will be reading a speech on behalf of the President, the report said.
