Hepa A on scallops brings down US demand for PH seafood
US demand for Philippine seafood has dropped following the Hepatitis A outbreak in Hawaii allegedly caused by scallops from the Philippines.
Sunstar, quoting Philexport-Cebu president and seafood exporter Nelson Bascones, reported that the US Food and Drug Administration’s tests on scallops from the Philippines last month has affected demand for other seafood.
Bascones, however, is optimistic that buying in the seafood market will eventually recover in the coming months.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has implemented stricter tests and audit on seafood products following the incident.
