Plant industry puts prov’l directors on alert of seasonal pests
The Bureau of Plant Industry said 15 regional directors of the Department of Agriculture have been ordered to take precautions for seasonable infestations expected to hit farmlands.
BPI issued this memorandum on its website directing regional directors to closely monitor identified areas for possible infestations, which are expected during the cooler last quarter of each year.
Top listed pests this time of year are stem borer insects, bacterial leaf blight rodents, and rice black bugs.
Agriculture Secretary Manny Pinol even projected of a bumper corn harvest this year despite the damage caused by the El Nino phenomenon early this year.
