Plant more mangoes, Profood owner tells farmers
‘Mango King’ Justin Uy urged farmers to plant more mangoes to meet the rising global demand.
Uy spoke during the Mentor Me program of Go Negosyo and the trade department held in Davao City.
The Philippine Information Agency reported Uy as saying that China has overtaken the Philippines in terms of mango production. China is now number 2 in mango production while the Philippines ranks sixth.
During the mentoring program launch, Uy recalled to entrepreneurs how he started Profood International Corporation, which now exports mango products in 52 countries.
He said he started in the dried mango business in the 1970s with a capital of P20,000 which he borrowed from friends at an interest rate of 4 percent.
