Visayas rice output improves

Rice output in Visayas has improved by 3.3 percent in the first six months this year, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The PSA reported that rice production in Visayas rose from 528,247 metric tons in 2015 to 545,696 MT this year. The PSA attributed the higher yield to increased hectarage planted to rice from 149,867 hectares in the first half last year to 154,805 hectares in the same period this year.

Visayas Region is targeting a total harvested area of 290,356 hectares and one million MT for the entire of 2016.

A report by Philippines News Agency said Rodel Macaranas, rice program report officer, said that what the government really want is to attain self-sufficiency in rice production.
