Bill on banana center gets House panel nod
The House committee on agriculture and food has approved a bill seeking the creation of a Philippine National Banana Research and Development Center to help farmers fight diseases and improve their production, the Businessmirror reported.
Under House Bill 2926, the center will be established in Panabo City in Davao del Norte and will be known as the Antonio O. Floirendo Sr. Banana Research and Development Center.
The research center will be under the Department of Agriculture.
It is mandated to do comprehensive studies and research on banana diseases, on how to increase fruit yield, and on good varieties of banana.
It will also set up a germplasm collection and gene bank for banana and banana strains.
