DA uncovers import permit recycling scam
The Department of Agriculture has uncovered the scam involving the recycling of used import permits by unscrupulous traders.
The validation of the import permits following the revocation of all previously issued import permits revealed that the documents “are indeed being recycled and reused by unscrupulous importers,” Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said on his Facebook page.
“This was discovered as the Dept. of Agriculture ordered a review and revalidation of SPS clearances and import permits earlier issued by the agency over the last four months,” Piñol said.
An even bigger cause for concern was that some private importers were found to have been holding as much as 180 import documents that have yet to be used and that the processing of the permits is only done online by a private group for only P50 per transaction.
Piñol said the private group is intercommerce.com.ph.
Piñol himself has taken the lead in the issuance of the import permits, relegating the the department’s agencies to just a recommendatory role.
