DENR starts removing fish pens in Laguna Lake
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has started dismantling illegal fish pens in Laguna Lake based on the directive of President Duterte.
Duterte ordered the fish pens in Laguna Lake removed by Dec. 16 in order to give small fishermen a chance to fish for their daily livelihood.
He said most of the fish operators are local officials or retired policemen and soldiers.
DWIZ reported that the first ones to be dismantled were the illegal fish cages on the lake’s side of Muntinlupa City.
The DENR appealed to the fish pen operators to voluntarily remove the pens.
Environment Secretary Gina Lopez is set to meet with the fish pen owners to discuss their voluntary compliance with Duterte’s orders.
