PH eyes Japan loan for farm equipment
The Philippine government has started negotiations with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency for a long term loan to buy farm equipment, Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said in a post on his Facebook page.
Piñol also made the announcement at the 50th anniversary of the breeding of IR8 or the Miracle Rice at the International Rice Research Institute compound in Los Baños, Laguna.
Farm mechanization is part of Piñol’s strategy to increase productivity in the sector.
Piñol said he urged President Rodrigo Duterte to implement a program to strengthen agriculture as the next president of the republic may not have share the same view on the farm sector.
“The strong foundations of a sound agriculture program, including rice production, must be implemented during his term. I shared with him the fear that the next president may not have the same mindset he has on agriculture,” Piñol said.
“The most difficult challenge is how to change farmers’ mindset and convince them to adopt new technology,” he added.
