DA prohibits transport of fresh Palawan mangoes due to weevil disease
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said Palawan’s mangoes will not be allowed to leave the province until its mango farmers organize themselves and get rid of the mango pulp weevil that has been infesting the province.
Piñol said the Department of Agriculture would not allow the transport of mangoes outside Palawan to prevent the spread of mango pulp weevil disease to other areas that produce and process mangoes for export.
He said he wants Palawan to export processed mango products instead of fresh mangoes.
He said the DA will provide irradiation machines, mango drying facilities and mango processing equipment for dried mango processing, mango puree, and canned fruit to establish Palawan as a producer of world-class processed mangoes.
