Piñol orders analysis of acidic Palawan soil
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol has ordered PhilRice and the Bureau of Soils and Water Management to form a team to conduct an extensive soil analysis in Palawan.
Piñol said Palawan Gov. Pepito Alvarez asked the Department of Agriculture (DA) to address the problem of a highly-acidic soil in Palawan which results in very low rice production and to provide more irrigation facilities.
He said he ordered the setting up of solar-powered irrigation systems in Palawan that will draw water from the rivers without having to build dams.
He said he also ordered the procurement of more tractors, power tillers, harvesters, dryers and rice processing facilities for Palawan.
He added that farmers will also be convinced to use hybrid seeds using as incentives the provision of fertilizers.
Piñol said Alvarez has pledged an expansion area of 100,000 hectares for the country’s rice production program, on top of the existing 59,000 hectares of rice farms. This would translate to 110 percent rice self-sufficiency for the province.
