Chef Matthew Astorga reveals Pinoy cuisine’s role in his journey
Filipino-Canadian contestant of MasterChef Canada Chef Matthew Astorga revealed how Filipino cuisine played an integral role in honing his culinary skills.
“Food is a big part of our culture. My mom would cook, and it was the highlight of our day. I learned to cook at an early age by watching her and my tita from the Philippines—they love to cook!”, Astorga told Inquirer.
Astorga, a British Columbia resident, competed in the reality show, and showcased some Filipino food during the competition.
“My love for food. What actually gave me a lot of inspiration was the fact that I was Filipino—I was exposed to more food. In the Philippines, we ‘melt’ different cultures in our food. That really helped me out, because I was exposed to diverse flavor profiles”, he added.
