DA to train Myanmar’s piña weavers
The Philippines’ sunset pineapple fiber industry will be helping Myanmar’s fledgling piña fiber production through training of technicians and weavers.
This was President Duterte’s commitment to Myanmar State Counsellor and democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi during their meeting.
Suu Kyi said Myanmar is having difficulties in moving forward because of the lack of technical expertise.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol told Suu Kyi that the strong piña fiber used in weaving the cloth comes from a distinct variety called Spanish Red.
Piñol told Duterte that the Department of Agriculture could help Myanmar’s pineapple fiber industry by training weavers in the province of Aklan, home of the Piña Fiber Industry.
He also invited Suu Kyi to visit the weaving centers in Aklan when she visits the Philippines sometime this year.
