FAO places PH’s 2016 paddy rice production at 18.5M tons
The Food and Agriculture Organization estimates the Philippines paddy rice production at 18.5 million tons last year, higher than the 17.5 million reported in 2015.
“Abundant monsoon rains and improved water availability are also expected to lead to large recoveries in paddy output in Nepal, the Philippines and Thailand,” the March issue of the FAO’s Crop Prospects and Food Situation report said.
The FAO expects Asia’s paddy rice output in 2016 at 673 million tons, 1.2 percent more than 2015 levels, with India accounting for much of the growth. Milled rice is expected to amount to 446.66 million tons in Asia this year, higher than last year’s 441.4 million tons, with trade continuing to grow.
According to the FAO, rice imports in Asia is expected to grow by 7.9 percent to 13.5 million tons from 12.5 million tons last year, with exports growing by 4.8 percent to 35 million tons from 33.4 million tons.
