Guimaras mangoes get free promotion in Sikat Pinoy National Food Fair

The Guimaras Mango Growers & Producers Development Cooperative (GMGPDC) benefited from the recently concluded Sikat Pinoy National Food Fair at SM Megamall Mega Trade Hall.

Rosario Griesser, GMGPDC president, on Tuesday said the fair that was held March 15-19 was organized by the Department of Trade and Industry – Bureau of Domestic Trade Promotion (DTI-BDTP).

Griesser said the Guimaras cooperative was able to join the national marketing activity for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through the efforts of the Department of Trade and Industry in Western Visayas led by OIC regional director Rebecca Rascon and the Provincial Government of Guimaras led by Governor Samuel Gumarin.

Griesser, who owns eight hectares of mango orchard in Barangay Alaguisoc here, said the coop sold 788 kilos of fresh Guimaras mangoes.

“We sold the mangoes at Php200 per kilo, it was a promotional price because the province shouldered the transportation of mangoes and the fee for the booth,” she explained.

Griesser welcomed the efforts of national government agencies and the local government unit in helping in the promotion of Guimaras Mangoes. She said exposure to consumers and buyers is a big help to market their produce.

Over 200 small and medium enterprises from all over the country joined in the activity.

According to the DTI, this year’s Sikat Pinoy National Food Fair highlighted organic products and hydroponics garden; halal-certified products pavilion of the Bicol region; and Zamboanga Peninsula’s selected products. The fair was intended to help SMEs upgrade standards to be more competitive through their exposures.

The Sikat Pinoy National Food Fair is now on its 5th year. The five-day fair is both a retail and order-taking event, so institutional buyers and traders are also invited to discover up-and-coming food SMEs for new offerings for supermarket shelves. Corporate consumers like hotels and restaurants will have the opportunity to meet new producers and negotiate with existing suppliers. (PNA)
