Benham Rise expedition postponed due to LPA
An incoming low pressure area in the eastern section of Luzon has resulted in the cancellation of the Department of Agriculture’s expedition to Benham Rise this week.
Undersecretary Eduardo Gongonga, also executive director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), said the LPA would result in rough seas, which would make tests and explorations on April 14 and 15 difficult.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said the expedition has been rescheduled for the second week of May, when the waters are expected to be calmer.
Participants of the expedition, who are supposed include agriculture officials and scientists, are supposed to set up fish sheds in the shallow portion of Benham Rise.
The viability of establishing structures in the shallow portion for a research facility for scientists and researchers, complete with a helicopter landing pad, is also supposed to be ascertained.
