DA chief mulls inventory of PH rice stocks
Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Manny Pinol aims establishing an inventory of rice stocks nationwide.
The inventory will help government better plan rice production in the country, he noted.
Pinol said the inventory will also help government determine necessity, extent and timing of rice importation.
“We must establish baseline information on rice stocks in the country,” he said.
Pinol is proposing for the creation of a task force that’ll inspect rice warehouses nationwide.
Such inspection will show status of the country’s rice stocks, he noted.
Data gathered during the inspection will form the baseline information for government’s rice inventory, he continued.
He came up with such plan as Malacanang’s priority for government to buy locally produced — not imported — rice raised concern this may fuel spike in prices and shortage in supply of the staple grain.
Pinol clarified Malacanang wants to prioritize buying of locally produced rice particularly during peak harvest seasons to help farmers earn.
That prioritization enabled local rice farmers to earn anadditional PHP23 billion, he noted.
“Their earnings will encourage them to plant more – we had good harvest and good income will result in greater productivity,” he said. (PNA)
