DA officials sail to Benham Rise Wednesday
Agriculture officials and fishermen will sail to the Philippine Ridge or Benham Rise on Wednesday to explore the potentials of the area in Aurora for the country’s food requirements.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said accompanying him are Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Undersecretary Eduardo Gongona, scientists on board the government-owned Oceanographic Research vessel MV DA-BFAR and at least three smaller DA-BFAR patrol vessels, and 10 fiberglass boats that would be distributed to fishermen in Quezon later on.
The flotilla will anchor payaos or fish sheds at about 70 feet where the fishermen could catch fish in Benham Rise using hand lines.
BFAR officials and scientists will also study whether it is viable to set up floating structures to serve as rest and refuge area for fishermen and scientists.
