DOST agency funds crab growing program
The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) is funding a national research and development program to raise the production of crabs by developing technology related to the industry.
Crab production continues to decline over the years due to abuse of the environment and the crabs’ natural habitat. There are also not so many crab growers due to lack of proper technology and small crabs.
The technology needed includes setting up a hatchery, nursery or grow out.
The R & D program has projects in Tigbauan in Iloilo, Guian and Lawaan in Eastern Samar, Bongao in Tawi-Tawi, and in Aklan.
Hatchery or grow out technology will be shared with government agencies, state universities and colleges and industry stakeholders.
Information, education and communication materials on crab growing will also be distributed to the public, especially the small growers, operators of hatcheries, and processors.
