Ilocos Norte farmers grow test tube garlic
A selected group of farmers from Ilocos Norte are participating in a project being done by the University of the Philippines Los Baños, the Ilocos Norte provincial government and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research to produce quality garlic planting materials.
The Ilocos Times reported that the Ilocano farmers were trained on how to plant tissue-cultured garlic.
The test tube garlic cloves were pilot-tested in garlic producing towns like Pasuquin, Batac and Burgos.
Ronald Garalde, a garlic farmer from Burgos town, was the first to deliver a certified virus-free garlic planting material for the next harvest season.
Garalde started with 60 cloves of test tube garlic produced at the Institute of Plant Breeding, which he planted in his farm in Paayas village.
In two years’ time, he expects to produce around 100,000 bulbs, which will be disseminated to Ilocos farmers.
