Ilocos Norte tops rice productivity level in Region 1

For years now, Ilocano rice farmers have become among the most advanced and receptive in terms of adopting new farming technologies as they continue to dominate the industry in terms of production efficiency.

With an average production level of 4.8 tons per hectare, Provincial Agriculturist Norma Lagmay said Ilocos Norte is the highest rice producing province in Region 1 or next to Nueva Ecija as the country’s top rice producer.

The national average for rice production is 3.8 tons per hectare.

Lagmay said the province is fortunate to have highly competent farmers who are willing to adapt to change as shown in the high utilization of hybrid and inbred seeds.

As a consistent rice achiever, she said Ilocos Norte is hopeful to make it again to this year’s national search for outstanding rice producing provinces.

According to Lagmay, data presentation to the 15-member panel of judges and field validation with actual interview with farmers were already conducted.

The awarding of winners is expected this April in time for the Farmers’ Month celebration.

The province is now a “Hall of Fame” awardee as an outstanding rice producer with a cash reward of Php 4 million.

Despite the occurrence of natural calamities such as drought and typhoon, Lagmay said Ilocos farmers are able to rise above the challenge with the full support of the national and local government units in providing rehabilitation assistance the soonest possible time. (PNA)
