N. Cotabato town rivers seeded with tilapia fingerlings

The creeks and rivers of Banisilan town in North Cotabato were seeded with 25,000 tilapia fingerlings as part of the nationwide program to rejuvenate the country’s inland waters or the Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa (Project BASIL).

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said around 100,000 fingerlings will be seeded in Banisilan’s waters so that people could soon have access to low-cost fish.

Piñol said most of the rivers of the town have been depleted of freshwater fish because of destructive fishing methods like the use of battery-powered electric fishing rods which kills even the young fish.

In exchange for the seeding, Banisilan mayor Jesus Alisasis and the village heads agreed to strictly implement the laws against illegal fishing and promised to safeguard the rivers and creeks from illegal fishing methods.

Fishing will be banned in the rivers and creeks for at least six months to allow the tilapia fingerlings to grow and multiply.
