Rice Terraces rehab gets P1M assist
The Department of Agriculture has given P1 million for the rehabilitation of the Cordillera Rice Terraces.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol handed the cheque to Ifugao officials to operationalize the Cordillera Rice Terraces Rehabilitation and Development Council, which will draft a comprehensive plan to bring back the 2,000-year-old rice terraces to its former glory.
He said he will submit the plan to President Duterte for funding.
Piñol, on his Facebook post, said rehabilitating the rice terraces, which have been abandoned by farmers who went into the more profitable vegetable farming, will take a lot of funds and efforts.
He said the DA is promoting Tinawon rice or heirloom rice, which is sold at P120 per kilo.
He also said the DA is introducing additional livelihood projects for families involved in rice farming in the terraces and will give each farming family two heads of dairy cattle which could be kept in a corral behind their homes and fed with locally available forage enriched with feed supplements.
