Sugarcane planters wary on future amid sugar price free fall
Thousands of sugarcane workers in Isabela and Cagayan have been worried about their daily subsistence as the sugar price had continuously fallen in the market.
Cagayan sugarcane planters cooperative member Remegio Dela Cruz, also a village chief in Bugnay, Tuao town, said the buying price of sugar at the wholesale market has dropped to P1,200 a sack now, down from the P2,000 a sack in the same period last year.
“Beverage companies have been mostly using high fructose corn syrup instead of sugar,” he noted.
Due to the ordeal, sugarcane planters have initiated meetings to firm up their pleas, and are finalizing a letter to be addressed to Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pinol or a personal meeting with him.
They appealed to Pinol to extend assistance to affected sugarcane workers aside from asking him to reconsider his decision to scrap an order which regulates the importation of high fructose corn syrup. (PNA)
