This is why everyone’s talking about Pepsi

Pepsi has recently dropped its latest commercial and immediately drew flak from netizens for “missing the mark”.

The ad, which follows a group of protesters, features Kendall Jenner who left a photo shoot in the ad to join the “movement”. Towards the end of the video, the Kardashian model hands out a can of Pepsi to a security officer, seemingly depicting an iconic scene during the Black Lives Matter movement in 2016.

The video, however, was highly criticized for mocking resistance movements, how the video emphasized white privilege, and how it showed misrepresentation of activism. Even the late Martin Luther King Jr. tweeted her disbelief.

Ultimately, Pepsi decided to pull out the ad, and released a public apology.

“Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize,” Pepsi wrote in a statement on Wednesday. “We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are removing the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position.”, its statement read.
