DA sees potential in Red Nile Tilapia
The Department of Agriculture (DA) sees a lot of potential in the fresh breed of fish products like the Red Nile Tilapia that the country could market locally and globally.
“During the launching of the Circles of Life fish culture project in M’lang, North Cotabato in March of this year, the fisheries head in the province, Usop Pendaliday, gave me several breeders of the Red Nile Tilapia which were placed in the small fishponds that I have in my farm in Kidapawan City,” Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said.
“This new fish could prove to be an exciting item in Philippine Aquaculture in the years to come. They not only multiply fast, they also grow fast and most of all, their taste is excellent,” he added.
According to him, the Red Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis Niloticus, is a relatively large cichlid fish.
The fish breed, which Piñol described as “new hot product”, can tolerate brackish water, and survives in temperatures between 55 and 98 degrees Fahrenheit.
