Urban residents urged to produce their own food
The Department of Agriculture is urging urban residents to produce their own food through a gardening project.
The Department of Agriculture (DA), in partnership with the Local Government of Quezon City, has recently launched the ‘Pagkain Para sa Masa’, an urban gardening project in Barangay Bahay Toro.
“The food production initiative aims to encourage people living in urban areas to produce their own food to help attain the food sufficiency and sustainability goal of President Duterte,” the DA said.
DA Undersecretaries Ariel Cayanan, Ranibai Dilangalen, Evelyn Laviña, and Bernadette Puyat led the launch of the project together with Quezon City Vice Mayor Josefina Belmonte.
As part of the government’s drive to improve food production, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol is also urging Filipino families to grow fruit-yielding trees in their areas.
According to him, planting should be a family-based agricultural activity rather than a national reforestation program of the Philippines’ Greening Program to succeed.
