PH sugar allowed to enter US
Philippines will now be able to export sugar in the United States after securing certain allocation for fiscal year 2018, which begins in October.
A statement from the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) showed that the Philippines was given a sugar imports quota of 142,160 metric tons raw value (MTRV) for next year.
The Philippines particularly obtained the third largest allocation of the total 1.117 million MTRV in-quota quantity of the TRQ.
This was next to the Dominican Republic and Brazil, which received 185,335 MTRV and 152,691 MTRV, respectively.
These allocations are based on each country’s historical shipments to the United States.
The TRQ is the minimum amount to which the US is committed under the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement.
