DA chief in social media brawl with Rappler reporter
Agriculture Chief Secretary Emmanuel Piñol caught himself in a social media brawl with Rappler reporter Frank Cimatu when the latter accused him of corruption through a Facebook post.
Cimatu’s post– which says “Agri Sec got rich by 21-M in 6 months. Bird Flu pa more”– immediately caught the attention of Piñol and his allies who all replied to the post as well as in almost every comment containing allegations against the agri chief.
At one point, a certain Ariel Valerio, who also commented on the post, even implied that there’s a conflict of interest between Piñol’s business dealings and his government work since he owns a multi-million worth agriculture assets.
Piñol then challenged Valerio to file a case against him.
In a lengthy Facebook post, Piñol said he knows Cimatu personally and that he could not understand how the latter could have jumped to such a malicious post which was based on a report by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) written by Malou Mangahas.
“The report was all about the Statements of Assets Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) which public officials like me are required to file every year. The PCIJ, in citing my case said: ‘Across a seven-year period, a fantastic P21.9-million increase was recorded in the net worth of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol, or from P3.6 million in the SALN he filed as of Dec. 31, 2009, to P2.6 million in his latest SALN as of Dec. 31, 2016,” Piñol said.
